Newport Winter Festival: New England’s Biggest Winter Party
I’m going to say it and you can’t stop me; most winter “fun” in New England is either overpriced, overcrowded, or just plain cold. But every February, Newport, Rhode Island throws the rulebook out the window with the Newport Winter Festival—a 10-day, all-ages, actually fun winter event that’s worth the drive.
What Makes It Different
This isn’t just another craft fair or ice rink. The Newport Winter Festival packs 10 days with live music, ice sculpting competitions, food and drink tastings (always a big draw for me), beach polo, chili cook-offs, comedy shows, and family activities. There’s even a hot chocolate bar crawl. You can hit up a silent disco, catch fireworks over the harbor, and still be home before the snow melts off your windshield.
Who’s It For?
Everyone. Families, couples, friend groups, solo explorers—if you’re sick of the winter rut, this is your chance to break out of it. Some events require tickets, but there are plenty of free things to do, too.
Insider Tips
Plan ahead: Some events sell out (especially live music and tastings). Check the official schedule and grab tickets early.
Dress for the weather: A lot happens outdoors—layers are your friend.
Parking: Newport gets busy—use public lots or park-and-ride options if you can.
Bring your camera: Ice sculptures and fireworks are Instagram gold.
