Fall Prep: Gutters and Heating Systems

September 04, 2025•2 min read

As summer winds down, homeowners face the quiet but crucial work of getting their houses ready for fall.

I know… I know… none of us wants to face it. Fall is nearly upon us and we all want to hold on to Summer with a tight grip. I get it.

But time waits for no one! 🙂

Two of the most important September to-dos often go overlooked: gutters and heating systems.

Gutters

Gutters are the first line of defense against water damage. When they’re clogged with leaves and debris, rain backs up, spills over, and can seep into foundations or ruin landscaping.

A quick cleaning now, before the leaves begin to fall in earnest, can save thousands in potential repairs. Just as important is inspecting for loose joints or sagging runs that could worsen under heavy autumn rains.

Poorly maintained gutters can lead to internal water damage

Heating Systems

Heating systems are the second priority. While the crisp September nights are still bearable without the furnace (we’re sleeping with the windows wide open, baby!). Waiting until the first cold snap to book a service call is a recipe for long delays and chilly mornings.

Oil and gas companies get swamped once October arrives. A tune-up now not only ensures that the system fires reliably on the first frosty night, but also improves efficiency, which pays back in lower winter bills.

And if you think I’m discussing this just for the newsletter… nope. I had this discussion with buyer clients last week during their home inspection.

In short, gutters and heating systems may not be glamorous, but they’re seasonal chores that repay attention many times over. Take care of them in September, and you’ll head into fall with peace of mind.
